About me

My name is Irena Kara (Mensikova), I write, edit and work for a humanitarian organization. I currently live in Ankara, Turkey and eat a lot of baklava.

I like to:

  1. Write
  2. Eat
  3. Snowboard and enjoy winter
  4. Sit on the balcony and drink coffee
  5. Meet interesting people and places

I’m mainly writing about Turkey because that’s where I live at the moment. I want my texts to depict ordinary daily life in Turkey, local attractions and everyday things, and thus show that Turkey is not only full of negative news, politics and tragedies.

Since I also travel quite a bit while working for a humanitarian organization, I’m also sharing my insights from the places I visit either for work or leisure. I love to write “letters” from the places I travel to because I believe each place has unique atmosphere and energy and it helps me remember it the way I experienced it for the first time.

I always liked to write, whether it was short stories for the drawer when I was growing up, or political analysis for various media outlets. I still like to write, and I like it even more when you read, comment on or even criticize it. Whether there are five or five hundred of you, I will always write with enthusiasm.

I wish you all a pleasant reading, a beautiful day and good coffee :-).
